Although this book includes a great deal of historical material, it is primarily a psychological work that attempts to draw on history in the service of psychological understanding of how genocides and mass killings come about.

Håkan Nesser, 'the Godfather of Swedish Crime' (Metro), is back with the second installment in the Inspector Barbarotti series, The Root of Evil. *Shortlisted for the Crime Writers' Association's International Dagger * July 2007. A letter arrives on Inspector Barbarotti’s doorstep detailing a murder that is about to take place in his quiet Swedish town. By the time the police track down the subject of the letter, he is already dead. So when a second letter arrives, then a third, and a fourth, it’s a game of cat and mouse to stop the killer before he can make good on all of his promises. Meanwhile, an anonymous diary is unearthed depicting the incidents of a two week holiday in France five years earlier, and it doesn’t take Barbarotti long to realize the people populating the diary are the ones whose lives are now in the balance . . .

"Evil is the most serious of our moral problems. All over the world cruelty, greed, prejudice, and fanaticism ruin the lives of countless victims. Outrage provokes outrage. Millions nurture seething hatred of real or imagined enemies, revealing savage and destructive tendencies in human nature. Understanding this challenges our optimistic illusions about the effectiveness of reason and morality in bettering human lives. But abandoning these illusions is vitally important because they are obstacles to countering the threat of evil. The aim of this book is to explain why people act in these ways and what can be done about it."—John Kekes The first part of this book is a detailed discussion of six horrible cases of evil: the Albigensian Crusade of about 1210; Robespierre's Terror of 1793–94; Franz Stangl, who commanded a Nazi death camp in 1943–44; the 1969 murders committed by Charles Manson and his "family"; the "dirty war" conducted by the Argentinean military dictatorship of the late 1970s; and the activities of a psychopath named John Allen, who recorded reminiscences in 1975. John Kekes includes these examples not out of sensationalism, but rather to underline the need to hold vividly in our minds just what evil is. The second part shows why, in Kekes's view, explanations of evil inspired by Christianity and the Enlightenment fail to account for these cases and then provides an original explanation of evil in general and of these instances of it in particular.

All wars of the twentieth century beginning with the first world war until this minute that these lines are being written, are the creation of a small clique of powerful men, who act secretly, systematically, invisibly and who have the power and the financial freedom to buy not only the conscience of individuals, but the consciences of political leaders and to influence Nations, Governments, Religions, Political beliefs, almost everything and everyone. If Nations today wish to maintain their ethnic Integrity, to protect their traditions, their History and anything else that is the product of human achievements, they must not support that which is called GLOBALISM. The invisible and dangerous machinations of the Pyromaniacs of our times focus their attention on the enslavement of the human kind. They believe they can achieve that by undermining the History of the past, lowering the standards of education, controlling the financial freedoms of people by establishing financial markets and last but equally significant, by making us resign our liberties in the name of some threat or crisis. The United Nations (U.N.) is but a long range international apparatus clearly set up for financial and economic profit by a small group of powerful ONE WORLD revolutionaries, hungry for profit and power. Today's people must pin down their political leaders and ask them tough questions, regarding globalism, controlled governments, secret plans, unnecessary wars, open and unprotected borders, the Education, the Morals, the Religion and all those issues which make a better and safer world, for the PEOPLE and not for the OLIGARCHY.

In The Root of All Evil Kenneth Moore Startup looks to the sermons and writings of Protestant clergy to better understand the driving forces behind the antebellum southern economy. During this period of unprecedented American expansion, he finds, clerics of all denominations on both sides of the Mason-Dixon line displayed a remarkable unanimity in their condemnation of mammonism--the open pursuit of wealth, conspicuous consumption, lack of charity, and contempt of honest labor. This trend, the clergy argued, was diverting both North and South from their best interests and would ultimately destroy the nation. The Root of All Evil represents a challenge to any notion of an economically disinterested southern mind and culture by revealing an Old South in line ideologically with the mainstream of nineteenth-century capitalism, and also provides useful insights into southern religious life.

Tripoli, 1960s. During the years in which post-colonial Libya fell prey to the sprawling greed of the West, Michele Balistreri suffered a succession of blows that would scar him for life. The death of his mother; the unspeakable horror that befell his best friend's family; his father's role in Gaddafi's ascent to power; and the innocent blood pact that would corrupt the course of his future. Rome, 1982. In the wake of a ruinous blunder, a ground-down Commissario Balistreri escapes his regrets through sex, alcohol and gambling. His sole responsibilities are now a stilted investigation into the death of a South American student, and a tiresome obligation - as a gratitude to the man who saved his career - to a rising television starlet needing protection from the pitfalls of fame. As the risks to this girl, Claudia Teodori, begin to rise along with her reputation, the sorrows of Balistreri's past also start to push back into his present. Both of their fates are inextricably linked - and this driven, obsessive young woman must help this damaged detective fight a foe that follows her and refuses to forget him.

A serial killer is terrorizing Charleston. The third young woman, a tourist like the others, has been brutally murdered in her hotel room, the body mutilated. And once again, the killer has removed the victim’s heart. This is the work of someone with an agenda far darker than anything Charleston police detective Harry Holmes has faced before. This killer leaves behind a macabre signature: Entwined in the women’s hair is a strange, scraggly, odd-shaped root. Detective Holmes has no traceable DNA, not even a bloody footprint - only one thing to link the crimes: the murdered women had all taken a tour with Charleston writer and tour guide, Andrew Rutledge. And Rutledge, scion of an old Charleston family, is experiencing bizarre dreams and blackouts. Set against the luxuriant background of historic Charleston’s exceptional beauty and centuries-old customs, The Root of All Evil weaves a haunting and suspenseful tale of the awe-striking power of good and evil. “When darkness stares you right in the eye, all you can do is stare right back.” "David Farrow's novel of Charleston history, mystery and witchcraft kept me wide-eyed and spellbound. It kept me reading late into the night and listening for ghostly footsteps on the stairs." Charles Kuralt "...in the best tradition of Stephen King, Clive Barker and Dean Koontz, the end of the novel is as much a surprise as the beginning." Georgetown Times "There's violence, a little bit of sex, some rough language and a whole lot of Charleston... entreating and engaging..." The State
