On a bitter December night in 1988, Pan Am Flight 103, the Maid of the Seas, flying from Frankfurt to New York, exploded over Lockerbie, Scotland, killing 270 people. Among the victims were citizens from over 21 countries, 11 villagers, and 35 Syracuse University students returning home from studying abroad. The bombing set in motion a drama of epic proportions, played out on television screens and newspaper pages around the world. Scenes from the tragedy etched themselves on the public consciousness: a screaming mother at Kennedy Airport, collapsing upon learning of the fate of her child; flames engulfing the modest homes of Lockerbie; weeping Syracuse University students in mourning at a basketball game; the mangled cockpit of the jumbo jet resting in an idyllic Scottish meadow. Behind these scenes, another drama unfolded. Hundreds of journalists swarmed to the traumatized village. In New York, scores of reporters, photographers, and cameramen rushed to the airport to record the reactions of bereaved family members. All over the country, people watched the names of the dead scrolling across their televisions, many praying for those presumed to be on board. The disaster also engulfed institutions, many unprepared to mediate between the public's need for information and the need for privacy by those most affected. In engrossing detail, The Media and Disasters chronicles the story behind the headlines, illustrating how the media and the people it encountered in pursuit of the news experienced and affected the journalistic process. The book addresses, in narrative fashion, the universal themes common to most tragedies, emphasizing the increasingly powerful role of the media and its agents in representing such catastrophes to the world.

The destruction of Pan Am Flight 103 over the Scottish town of Lockerbie in December 1988 was the largest attack on Britain since World War Two. 259 passengers and 11 townsfolk of Lockerbie were murdered. Libyan Abdelbaset al-Megrahi was convicted of the crime. He maintained his innocence until his death in 2012. Among the passengers was Flora, beloved daughter of Dr Jim Swire. Jim accepted American claims that Libya was responsible, but during the Lockerbie Trial he began to distrust key witnesses and supposed firm evidence. Since then it has been revealed that the USA paid millions of dollars to two central identification witnesses, and the only forensic evidence central to the prosecution has been discredited. The book takes us along Dr. Swire’s journey as his initial grief and loss becomes a campaign to uncover the truth behind not only a personal tragedy but one of the modern world’s most shocking events.

Every since the terrorist attack of September 11th, the words "war on terror" have become firmly embedded in the global consciousness. Do we fall victim to bitterness and fear; or do we respond the way Jesus would respond in sacrificial love? These are the questions everyone must answer. As we look at news reports, terrorist attacks are only getting worse. This book gives the heart wrenching story of Lisa Gibson's loss of her brother in the 1988 terrorist bombing of Pan Am flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland and how her faith has allowed her to overcome that act of evil for good by serving in the country responsible. This book offers hope and encouragement for those struggling with fear and inspires faith to propel everyone to engage in this strategic battle. "This is a remarkable story of one woman's struggle with tragedy and her care for those who many would say are her enemies." Congressman Joseph R. Pitts "To reflectively read this book is to go farther in coming to terms with what God truly wants to see in Christians loving their enemies. Gibson takes it from religious poetry to teeth gritting reality. How I yearn that every Western Christian who is repulsed by Muslim terrorism would follow in her steps." Dr. Greg Livingstone Founder of Frontiers Lisa Gibson is the Founder and Executive Director of the Peace and Prosperity Alliance. She is an attorney and has served in senior leadership positions with advocacy and global missions organizations. Lisa has a unique voice on global terrorism having lost her brother on the 1988 terrorist bombing of Pan Am flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland. Lockerbie: The Truth at last reveals the facts about what happened on that awful night at Lockerbie.

On 21 December 1988, Pan Am Flight 103 from Frankfurt to Detroit was destroyed by a bomb, killing all 243 passengers and sixteen crew. Large sections of the aircraft, bodies and personal effects crashed onto residential areas of Lockerbie, Scotland, resulting in the deaths of a further eleven people on the ground. The psychological damage to traumatised residents would take many years to disappear; in some cases, it never did. Libyan Abdelbaset al-Megrahi is the only person to have been convicted of the crime – though few believe that he acted alone and some believe him innocent. Author Douglas Boyd presents evidence that it was Iran, not Libya, which was responsible for the attack. On 3 July 1988 (less than six months before the Lockerbie bombing), Iran Air flight 655 was in Iranian airspace on a Bandar Abbas-Dubai flight when it was shot down by missiles from the USS Vincennes sailing illegally into Iranian territorial waters. Government leader Ayatollah Khomeini decreed that blood should flow in revenge. However, this line of enquiry was quietly closed and Libya declared guilty because the White House wanted neighbouring Syria and Iran on-side for the build-up to the first Gulf War against Saddam Hussein’s Iraq. Lockerbie: The Truth at last reveals the facts about what happened on that awful night at Lockerbie.
