Solution 186-195: Dubai Democracy is the fifth book in the Solution series. Using Dubai as a sort of modernist blank slate for urban and social renewal, author Ingo Niermann confronts today's most relevant cultural and technological developments with analytical elixirs that are as pertinent as they are unbelievable. Niermann's Dubai will become as specialized as housing the global center for treating diabetes--called Sugar World--and as universal as offering non-confrontational public spaces where both a state of total advertising and compulsive kindness, or what he calls a "personal humaneness account," co-exist. Translation from the German by Gerrit Jackson

"As for the more long-term solutions, this is certainly a job for the avant-garde, be it in the shape of architects, supercilious tourist intellectuals, secret societies or some other semi-conspiratorial cluster... This demands an avantgarde a little more proactive... and responsive than a Brechtian Villa Aurora... It's hardly a surprise that, over time, most Americans have become suspicious of people sympathetic to avant-gardism, assuming them all to be fascist hyena pigs, ipso facto no less. But in point of fact, America offers a rich tradition of politicized avant-garde conspiracies, the Black Panthers being only the most impressive recent example to have caught the public eye. To be honest, anything in my own book was long tucked away in their laundry list already." Solution 168-185: America is the fourth book in the Solution series. Opting for the United States of America, "still the most proficiently colonial place I know," Zolghadr provides a compilation of highly entertaining "solutions," where the objective is not the education of America so much as the pleasure of a text that purports to be just that. Tirdad Zolghadr is an independent writer/curator based in Berlin. He writes for frieze and other publications, and is editor-at-large for Cabinet magazine. Zolghadr most recently organized the national pavilion of the United Arab Emirates, Venice Biennale 2009, and the long-term project Lapdogs of the Bourgeoisie (with Nav Haq). He's a curatorial advisor to the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi. Zolghadr currently teaches at the Center for Curatorial Studies, Bard College.

In recent years, Turkey has become an ever more important actor on the international stage. However, Turkey-EU relations still remain in a state of flux. The EU and Turkey seem to have moved apart in their political aspirations after Turkey’s EU accession talks faced a stalemate over the Republic of Cyprus’ EU accession as a divided island. Likewise, both Turkey and the EU have recently faced new socio-political realities, such as the Eurozone crisis, the Arab Spring and the Turkish government’s shifting foreign policy towards the Middle East region. Such developments have rendered EU membership potentially a less desirable prospect for an increasingly self-confident Turkey. In light of these recent events, this book explores the evolving challenges and opportunities facing the more than 50-year old Turkey-EU relationship. This volume focuses particularly on the role of the Cyprus issue, the potential for closer Turkey-EU cooperation in the aftermath of the Arab Spring, the impact on Turkish citizens and politics, as well as the concept of Europeanization, especially in relation to Turkey’s democratic reform process. In drawing together perspectives from the disciplines of international relations, political science and law, this book offers a unique, interdisciplinary outlook towards the changing role of Europe in Turkey’s political discourse. This book will be of interest to researchers and students of Turkey-EU relations, EU external relations Law, Europeanization and Turkish and Middle Eastern politics.

German painting two thousand and three alludes to the contemporary situation in its title, which is not necessarily to say it advances a radical counterprogram to classical discourses of painting. Nor does it set out to sketch current themes and trends, or to identify a national phenomenon, which painting most certainly isn?t. The title?s specifically German element is more a response to the needs and social circumstances that have given rise to painting?s present (return to) popularity, and to the strategies young artists in particular are developing to meet this. The focus is on individual approaches that seem symptomatic at present insofar as they strive to occupy up-to-date positions, adopting diverse strategies to integrate painting?s historical potential for critique and reflection. With a text by Ingo Niermann and numerous colour reproductions, the catalogue documents over 50 current positions of predominantly younger German or in Germany living artists.Artists: Tomma Abts, Yesim Akdeniz Graf, Kai Althoff, Monika Baer, Frank Bauer, Dirk Bell, Umit Bilgi, Henning Bohl, Andre Butzer, Thomas Eggerer, Tim Eitel, Jesko Fezer/Axel John Wieder, Lutz Fezer, Christian Flamm, Carsten Fock, Caroline von Grone, Katharina Grosse, Gabi Hamm, Sebastian Hammwohner/Uwe Henneken/Dani Jakob/Gabriel Vormstein, Klaus Hartmann, Eberhard Havekost, Tilo Heinzmann, Andreas Hofer, Sergej Jensen, Johannes Kahrs, Kiron Khosla, Jutta Koether, Hendrik Krawen, Kalin Lindena, Dietmar Lutz, Antje Majewski, Bernhard Martin, Rupprecht Matthies, Jonathan Meese, Birgit Megerle, Stephan Melzl, Klaus Merkel, Stefan Muller, Martin Neumaier, Frank Nitsche, Silke Otto-Knapp, Susanne Paesler, Gunter Reski, Anselm Reyle, Thomas Scheibitz, Tilo Schulz, Andreas Schulze, Eva Schwab, Markus Selg, Torsten Slama, Johannes Spehr, Lee Thomas Taylor, Wawrzyniec Tokarski, Corinne Wasmuht, Thomas Werner, Johannes Wohnseifer, Daniela Wolfer, Katharina Wulff, Amelie von Wulffen

Following the Arab Spring, some Arab autocrats are seeking to promote reform. Looking at Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Egypt, and Algeria, the chapters describe the political situation, the major players, the trends in media activity, the (limited) role of the US in the political and media landscape, and the opportunities for action.

Meet Blackwater USA, the private army that the US government has quietly hired to operate in international war zones and on American soil. Its contacts run from military and intelligence agencies to the upper echelons of the White House; it has a military base, a fleet of aircraft and 20,000 troops, but since September 2007 the firm has been hit by a series of scandals that, far from damaging the company, have led to an unprecedented period of expansion. This revised and updated edition includes Scahill's continued investigative work into one of the outrages of our time: the privatisation of war.
