Part of the generation of architects who were trained to draw both by hand and with digital tools, Nalina Moses recently returned to hand drawing. Finding it to be direct, pleasurable, and intuitive, she wondered whether other architects felt the same way. Single-Handedly is the result of this inquiry. An inspiring collection of 220 hand drawings by more than forty emerging architects and well-known practitioners from around the world, this book explores the reasons they draw by hand and gives testimony to the continued vitality of hand drawing in architecture. The powerful yet intimate drawings carry larger propositions about materials, space, and construction, and each one stands on its own as a work of art.

A humorous book about the Civil War? Most people would contend that there was very little about the Civil War that was funny. George W. Peck would disagree; and he should know-he was IN the Civil War. Who but Peck would enlist in the Union cavalry, even though he had never ridden a horse in his life? Who but Peck would chase a Confederate for hours at night, before realizing he was going around and around an abandoned race track? Who but Peck would build a magnificent bridge for his regiment, then find out it was over the wrong stream? And who but Peck-George W. Peck-would return from the war, write the Peck's Bad Boy series of books, become the mayor of Milwaukee, and later the governor of the State of Wisconsin? Yup, same guy. You have never seen the Civil War portrayed like this, by one of the truly unique characters of that era.

From a World War II concentration camp to the Korean War to the White House, this is the incredible story of Tibor “Teddy” Rubin, the only Holocaust survivor ever to receive a Medal of Honor... In 1944, a thirteen-year-old Hungarian boy named Tibor Rubin was captured by the Nazis and sent to the notorious Mauthausen concentration camp. The teenager endured its horrors for more than a year. After surviving the Holocaust, he arrived penniless in America, barely speaking English. In 1950, Tibor volunteered for service in the Korean War. After acts of heroism that included single-handedly defending a hill against an onslaught of enemy soldiers, braving sniper fire to rescue a wounded comrade, and commandeering a machine gun after its crew was killed, he was captured. As a POW, Tibor called on his experience in Mauthausen to help fellow GIs survive two and half years of captivity. Tibor returned from Korea in 1953, but it wasn’t until 2005—at age 76—that he was invited to the White House, where he received the Medal of Honor from President George W. Bush. It had taken over half a century for Tibor’s adopted homeland to recognize this Jewish immigrant for acts of valor that went “beyond the call of duty.” But when it did, the former Hungarian refugee became the only survivor of the Holocaust to have earned America’s highest military distinction. Drawing on eyewitness accounts and extensive interviews, author Daniel M. Cohen presents the inspiring story of Tibor “Teddy” Rubin for the first time in its entirety and gives us a stirring portrait of a true hero. INCLUDES PHOTOS

I would encourage all adult readers to read our (mine and my daughter's) point of view which provides an individual and personal point of view. I add a few of my experiences here to the rich wealth of information we share as we create a pool of stories of/for single parents. This story just adds to that rich wealth of information. I have learned to understand certain circumstances that are part of our lives; birth, love, learning and life and death. My story reflects on episodes of our lives; my marriage and divorce, my daughter's birth and development up until her second grade in school and hints of her life as an adult now. My perspective is different from others because I am an individual with unique experiences. I touch on decision making. I touch on emotions. I touch on sex and love. I am opinionated. I am culturally diverse. I grew up with two cultures which I have taken to heart. Both cultures offered what I think was best for me and my daughter. My father was an officer in the United States Army. My mother is a retired teacher with 35 years of experience. I was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, so were two of my sisters and the youngest was born in Massachusetts. I was brought up on military bases most of them in the United States. I learned two languages, Spanish thanks to my mom, and English, thanks to my dad. I am a teacher and I have taught since 1974. I have taught high school, elementary school, middle school and adult education. I have also learned from my students. I am old enough to know better. And most importantly of all, I share something graceful.

A memoir of quotes and reflections by Clayton Irmeger covering various aspects of his life and speaking to a number of heart issues.
Only one man could write "I Killed Optimus Prime" because he did, in fact, kill off the last-born of the original Thirteen Transformers who remains the superhero leader of the Autobots, those sentient self-configuring modular extraterrestrial robotic lifeforms which have become global cultural icons. In this book, Ron Friedman--widely known as the most prolific television writer in the history of the medium--shares the intimate details of a life and career that started with him cracking jokes to avoid death-by-schoolyard-bullies on the dusty streets of Weirton, West Virginia, took him through the world of professional architecture and finally through the gilded gates of every major Hollywood studio as the creative force behind nearly every hit TV series of his generation. His scripts for shows like FANTASY ISLAND, CHICO & THE MAN, STARSKY & HUTCH, ALL IN THE FAMILY, HAPPY DAYS are among more than 700 hours of his produced credits. With more than 40 feature film screenplays to his credit, Ron is a recognized screenwriting expert who has actually "been there and done that."A frequent collaborator and close friend of the late Marvel Comics genius Stan Lee, Ron is a multiple Emmy nominee most well known for his animation work, having created the characters and developed the material for major projects like G.I. JOE, THE MARVEL ACTION HOUR, THE TRANSFORMERS: THE MOVIE, IRON MAN, and THE FANTASTIC FOUR. This book is far more than a mere "memoir" and is a must-read for anyone working toward a Hollywood writing career. As a veteran Professor of Screenwriting at Chapman University's Dodge College of Film and Media Arts and as Senior Judge at The Los Angeles International Screenplay Awards, Friedman's insights into the craft and profession of screenwriting are pure gold. Read what he has to say here and you won't need to bother with all the self-promoting so-called "experts" (most of whom have never written or sold a single script!) have to say.Woven throughout this fast-paced tale are plenty of "inside the studio" stories and revelations about the personal lives of celebrities, all recounted with dazzling wit and the ribald candor (can you handle the truth?) that will have you either gasping in shock or on your knees with laughter."I Killed Optimus Prime" is far more than a breezy "Hollywood" read. It's the stuff of true genius from a Hollywood veteran who pulls out all the stops, lets it all hang out...and isn't worried about tucking any of it back in. WARNING: before you open this book, buckle your seatbelt. This is one very WILD RIDE!

"The classic of its kind." —Travel World "One of the most readable books in the whole library of adventure." —Sports Illustrated "The finest single-handed adventure story yet written." —Seafarer Challenged by an expert who said it couldn't be done, Joshua Slocum, an indomitable New England sea captain, set out in April of 1895 to prove that a man could sail alone around the world. 46,000 miles and a little over 3 years later, the proof was complete: Captain Slocum had performed the epic "first" single-handedly in a trusty 34-foot sloop called the "Spray." This is Slocum's own account of his remarkable adventures during the historic voyage. Slocum writes in a fast-paced, exhilarating style. His almost matter-of-fact descriptions of hazardous episodes and his colorful, often witty observations make this book perhaps the most delightful and absorbing adventure tale in history. Across the Atlantic he sailed, but chased by Moorish pirates off Gibraltar, he decided to circle Cape Horn instead and go around the world the other way! He tells of perils on stormy seas and of numerous harrowing events: his escape from a fleet of hostile canoes; an encounter with Black Pedro, "the worst murderer in Tierra del Fuego"; foiling a nocturnal attack by savages by strewing carpet tacks on the "Spray's" deck; submerged by a great wave off the Patagonian coast; the "rain of blood" in Australia; dodging coral reefs in the South Seas. In Samoa, he was visited by Mrs. Robert Louis Stevenson; in South Africa, he talked congenially with Stanley of "Stanley and Livingstone" fame, and met "Oom Paul" Kruger, President of the Transvaal republic. Kruger was incensed when one of his officials described Slocum's voyage as "around the world," since his religious beliefs convinced him that the world was flat! This robust classic of the sea has been widely read ever since its first publication in 1900. It has been reprinted several times and has even been required reading in many schools. This edition (complete with all of the original Thomas Fogarty illustrations) of Captain Slocum's story will prove as enjoyable and thrilling to the present generation of Americans as it was to our fathers and grandfathers.

From time immemorial, few narrative genres have had the power to so stir the emotions or captivate the imagination as the true account of a lone adventurer's triumph over the titanic forces of nature. Among the handful of such tales to emerge in the twentieth century, one of the most enduring surely must be Sir Francis Chichester's account of his solitary, nine-month journey around the world in his 53-foot ketch Gipsy Moth IV. The story of how the sixty-five-year-old navigator singlehandedly circumnavigated the globe, the whole way battling hostile seas as well as his boat's numerous design flaws, is a tale of superhuman tenacity and endurance to be read and reread by sailors and armchair adventurers alike. First published in 1967, just months after the completion of Chichester's historic journey, Gipsy Moth Circles the World was an instant international best-seller. It inspired the first solo around-the-world race and remains a timeless testament to the spirit of adventure. Francis Chichester's 1967 singlehanded circumnavigation set a blazing record for speed. He completed the voyage with just one stop and 226 days at sea. It was an amazing performance; that he was sixty-five years old made it the more so. Chichester then sat down to write one of the great narratives of modern voyaging.

Georg Elser was just an ordinary working-class citizen living in Munich, Germany. He was employed as a carpenter and had spent some time working in a watch factory. That all changed when he took it upon himself, without telling his family or friends, to single-handedly attempt to assassinate the most powerful man in all of Germany: the Führer, Adolph Hitler. Elser’s plan was centered on the Munich Beer Hall, where he knew Hitler would be making a speech. Working slowly and in secret, he started to assemble the bomb that he would use to try to kill Hitler. When finished, the bomb was hidden in a hollowed-out space near the speaker’s podium. The bomb went off successfully, killing eight people . . . but Hitler was not one of them. Bombing Hitler is an incredible tale that takes you back to 1939, and recreates the steps that led Elser from the Munich Beer Hall, to his attempted escape across the Swiss border, and sadly, to the concentration camp where his heroic life ended. Hear for the first time the epic and tragic story of a man who stood up for what he knew was right, opposed the most powerful man in Germany, and came close to single-handedly ending the war.

Why do we grow up to look, act, and feel as we do? Through most of the twentieth century, scientists and laypeople answered this question by referring to two factors alone: our experiences and our genes. But recent discoveries about how genes work have revealed a new way to understand the developmental origins of our characteristics. These discoveries have emerged from the new science of behavioral epigenetics--and just as the whole world has now heard of DNA, "epigenetics" will be a household word in the near future. Behavioral epigenetics is important because it explains how our experiences get under our skin and influence the activity of our genes. Because of breakthroughs in this field, we now know that the genes we're born with don't determine if we'll end up easily stressed, likely to fall ill with cancer, or possessed of a powerful intellect. Instead, what matters is what our genes do. And because research in behavioral epigenetics has shown that our experiences influence how our genes function, this work has changed how scientists think about nature, nurture, and human development. Diets, environmental toxins, parenting styles, and other environmental factors all influence genetic activity through epigenetic mechanisms; this discovery has the potential to alter how doctors treat diseases, and to change how mental health professionals treat conditions from schizophrenia to post-traumatic stress disorder. These advances could also force a reworking of the theory of evolution that dominated twentieth-century biology, and even change how we think about human nature itself. In spite of the importance of this research, behavioral epigenetics is still relatively unknown to non-biologists. The Developing Genome is an introduction to this exciting new discipline; it will allow readers without a background in biology to learn about this work and its revolutionary implications.
