An essential guide to safe and responsible four-wheel driving. Modern four-wheel drive vehicles are powerful and sophisticated machines, able to travel almost anywhere. Given their growing popularity with recreational drivers, there is an even more pressing need for adequate training. Even on sealed roads these vehicles require a different set of driving skills; off-road, the demands are many times greater. This second edition of the bestselling 4WD Driving Skills complements nationally recognised training courses and has been fully revised to include updated vehicle terminology, technology and recovery techniques. It explains the essential skills of four-wheel driving for every type of on- and off-road terrain, how to approach challenging situations, and what to do if things go wrong. It is a valuable reference for all four-wheel drive enthusiasts.

Featuring contributions from leading experts, the Road and Off-Road Vehicle System Dynamics Handbook provides comprehensive, authoritative coverage of all the major issues involved in road vehicle dynamic behavior. While the focus is on automobiles, this book also highlights motorcycles, heavy commercial vehicles, and off-road vehicles. The authors of the individual chapters, both from automotive industry and universities, address basic issues, but also include references to significant papers for further reading. Thus the handbook is devoted both to the beginner, wishing to acquire basic knowledge on a specific topic, and to the experienced engineer or scientist, wishing to have up-to-date information on a particular subject. It can also be used as a textbook for master courses at universities. The handbook begins with a short history of road and off-road vehicle dynamics followed by detailed, state-of-the-art chapters on modeling, analysis and optimization in vehicle system dynamics, vehicle concepts and aerodynamics, pneumatic tires and contact wheel-road/off-road, modeling vehicle subsystems, vehicle dynamics and active safety, man-vehicle interaction, intelligent vehicle systems, and road accident reconstruction and passive safety. Provides extensive coverage of modeling, simulation, and analysis techniques Surveys all vehicle subsystems from a vehicle dynamics point of view Focuses on pneumatic tires and contact wheel-road/off-road Discusses intelligent vehicle systems technologies and active safety Considers safety factors and accident reconstruction procedures Includes chapters written by leading experts from all over the world This text provides an applicable source of information for all people interested in a deeper understanding of road vehicle dynamics and related problems.

In this thesis, a framework for parallel planning agents is developed and applied to planning problems ranging from domain independent planning to planning for autonomous vehicle systems. This general-purpose framework combines both logic-based and cost-based planning approaches in order to allow for the creation of logic-constrained, cost optimal plans with respect to possibly dynamic environments, user objectives, and constraints while providing the ability to construct "anytime" plans in partitioned problem spaces.

"With this book, Prof. Dr. Vantsevich brings a tremendous contribution to the field of Automotive Transmission and Driveline Engineering, including his innovative methods for optimum driveline synthesis, as well as his experience with the development of various hardware solutions, from the basic limited slip differentials to the most sophisticated mechatronic systems." —Dr.-Ing. Mircea Gradu Director, Transmission and Driveline Engineering Head, Virtual Analysis Tools Chrysler Group LLC Now that vehicles with four and more driving wheels are firmly ensconced in the consumer market, they must provide energy/fuel-saving benefits and improved operational quality including terrain mobility, traction and velocity properties, turnability, and stability of motion. A first-of-its-kind resource, Driveline Systems of Ground Vehicles: Theory and Design presents a comprehensive and analytical treatment of driveline research, design, and tests based on energy efficiency, vehicle dynamics, and operational properties requirements. This volume addresses fundamental engineering problems including how to investigate the effect of different driveline systems on the properties of vehicles and how to determined the optimal characteristics of the driveline system and its power-dividing units (PDUs) and design it for a specific vehicle to ensure high level of vehicle dynamics, energy efficiency, and performance. The authors develop an analytical apparatus for math modeling of driveline systems that can be compiled from different types of PDUs. They also introduce methodologies for the synthesis of optimal characteristics of PDUs for different types of vehicles. Structured to be useful to engineers of all levels of experience, university professors and graduate students, the book is based on the R&D projects conducted by the authors. It explores intriguing engineering dilemmas such as how to achieve higher energy and fuel efficiency by driving either all the wheels or not all the wheels, solve oversteering issues by managing wheel power distribution, and many other technical problems.

This thought-provoking compilation delivers a message of awareness and transformation through the daily insights of an inspired non-conformist. As a partner to the 365 Rules website, it asks you to think critically about the world we live in. Rule No. 130: Holding establishments accountable for drinking and drivingjust another example of the self indulgent, irresponsible masses trying to deflect blame and suck upon the teat of societys two-headed litigious whore mother greed and avarice! Rule No. 355: Car alarmshow many times has your car alarm been set off accidentally? And how many times has your car been stolen? Exactly! Rule No. 320: I hate copsI hate the cops translation I hate getting busted every time I break the law. If you hate police, chances are youre breaking the law too often. Prepare yourself, because the gems of wisdom contained within its pages will awaken your desire to challenge the system. In the new world, 365 Rules will be handed down through generations as a continual work in progress to help keep our world on a righteous path. 365 Rules of the New World is a hilarious glimpse into the mind of a man craving serious societal change. Seemingly off-the-wall and curmudgeonly, Bennett manages to perfectly balance humor and poignancy to deliver a powerful punch to the gut of the whacky world we live in. "Immensely illuminating and enjoyable account of a road trip along Highway 83 ... Books like [Reynold's] prove that good travel writing remains not only very much alive, but essential."—The Bookseller In Slow Road to Brownsville, David Reynolds embarks on a road trip along Highway 83, a little-known two-lane highway built in 1926 that runs from Manitoba to the Mexican border at Brownsville, Texas. Growing up in a small town in England, Reynolds was enthralled by both the myth of the Wild West and the myth of the open road. This road trip is his exploration of the reality behind these myths as he makes his way from small town to small town, gas station to gas station, and motel to motel, hanging out in bars, drinking with the locals, and observing their sometimes-peculiar customs. Reynolds also wanted to see the country where the Sioux, the Cheyenne, the Comanches, the Apaches, and other native groups lived and died and to look at how their descendants live now. He describes the forced location of the Cheyenne people, discovers the true story of the Alamo, and finds similarities between Sitting Bull’s tours and those of the Black Panthers.
