So pretty! Who doesn't love zebras? They're one of the most easily recognized animals in the world due to their dramatic coloration, the patterns of which are unique to each individual. They are members of the Equidae family, as are horses and donkeys which they resemble. But zebras have a very different temperament from horses. They're more aggressive and dangerous than their cousins. They've been known to kick each other to death, severely bite humans who venture too close, and even to kill lions. They're also short-tempered and temperamentally volatile. The name itself is Portuguese for "wild horse." The plains zebra, also known as the common zebra, is the most common with its range spanning much of southern and eastern Africa south of the Sahara. The plains zebra is not endangered, but the mountain zebra is considered vulnerable and the Grevy's zebra is endangered. Six subspecies of Common Zebra have been recognized including the extinct quagga which was thought to be a separate species. Zebras are herbivorous and eat a variety of grasses but are also known to eat other plant material such as shrubs, herbs, twigs, leaves and bark. Their range extends from Ethiopia in north Africa to as far south as South Africa. Large populations exist in Namibia, Uganda and Rwanda. Plains or Common zebras obviously prefer plains and open grassland areas. They can live up to 25 years and weigh as much s 880 pounds. A group of zebras is called a "zeal."
