Excerpt from Essentials of Mechanical Drafting: Elements, Principles, and Methods, With Specific Applications in Working Drawings of Furniture, Machine, and Sheet Metal Construction; A Manual for Students Mechanical drafting enables constructive work of any kind to be carried on with accuracy and economy of time and material, and takes the place of lengthy verbal description which would fail to express with clearness and exactness the definite information required by the workman. It will be seen from Fig. 179 that certain general peculiarities of the form and structure of an object may be understood from an ordinary pictorial representa tion, but that it cannot Show the exact form, Size, and relation of all the lines and surfaces; hence the necessity for mechanical drawings which Show all hidden as well as visible parts of an object as they are and not as they would appear to the eye. Mechanical drafting is thus the graphic language of the constructive or mechanic arts, and ability to read or comprehend mechanical drawings is of as great importance to the workman, builder, and manufacturer as ability to make such representations is to the designer or draftsman; and a knowledge of general drafting principles is Of value to almost all men irrespective of their vocations. Because of the exact nature of the facts which it is intended to record or convey the drawing is generally executed with the aid of instruments. The mechanical character of the representation, together with its purpose and the usual means of execution, gives mechanical drafting its name. Machine drafting, architectural drafting, and engineering drafting are specific applications of mechanical drafting. A mechanical drawing properly dimensioned in figures and prepared as a guide in constructing the object is called a working drawing. Excerpt from Mechanical Drafting: Revised in 1915 In writing the original edition of this text it seemed wise to the author to base its arrangement and content upon two principles which considerable experience proved sound. These principles are: first, that the student can just as well, and perhaps better, be taught the use of instruments on work that will at the same time have educational value; second, that for greatest efficiency in teaching drawing the text should be made so complete and follow the classroom work so closely that lecturing is unnecessary. The above principles were followed by first designing a very flexible course in drafting, substituting drawings of machine parts for the conventional geometrical figures. The work was arranged into definite groups, according to subject, each group being scheduled for a definite amount of time. Second, the text was so arranged that section, lesson or chapter one, gave all information necessary for the work included in group one, etc. After three years' very satisfactory trial of the text, the department of drawing has undertaken a complete revision with the desire that the work shall be not only a text, more complete that the first, but also a book of reference that will be of service after the student has complete the course.
