John McGahern did not spread himself thinly as a writer. Nearly all of his creative energy went into what was central for him: the great novels and stories that are now part of the canon of Irish and world literature. Yet he spoke out when he felt he had something worth saying and his non-fiction writings are of great interest to anyone who loves his work, and to all those interested in the recent history of Ireland. This book brings together all of McGahern's surviving essays, reviews and speeches. In them his canon of great writers - Tolstoy, Chekhov, James, Proust and Joyce - is cited many times, with deep and subtle appreciation. His discussions of Irish writers who influenced him are generous and brilliant - among them Michael McLaverty, Ernie O'Malley and Forrest Reid. His interventions on issues he felt strongly about - sectarianism, women's rights, the power of the church in Ireland - are lucid and far-sighted.
We have said that everyone carries within his heart a blueprint of his ideal love. The best of human loves, no matter how devoted they be, must end—and there is nothing perfect that ends. If there be anyone of whom it is possible to say ...

With his characteristic eloquence and brilliance, Fulton J. Sheen presents a moving portrayal of the Blessed Virgin Mary that combines deep spirituality with history, philosophy and theology. All the major aspects and events of Mary's life are lovingly portrayed in this word portrait that is a never failing source of information, consolation and inspiration. Sheen also gives profound insights into all the Marian beliefs ranging from the Immaculate Conception to the Assumption to the miracle of Our Lady of Fatima. While considering the different phases of Mary's life, Bishop Sheen discusses various problems common to mankind of every age and reveals clearly that every problem can be resolved. He emphasizes the unique dignity, strength and gifts of women and their ability to help heal the world's problems. Sheen stresses mankind's need of the Mother of God and her burning love for all her children. The great resurgence of devotion to Mary is God's way of emphasizing the worth and dignity of every person against the false doctrines that have so confused the modern world.

A few minutes before my wife died, I found myself wishing for time to resolve our two issues, which we hadn’t talked about. Falling in the bathroom and breaking her hip was one. She felt I should have run into the bathroom and saved her. I was not prepared to save her psychologically and didn’t have time. The other issue was a rape eighteen months before at the city swimming pool in the dressing room. My lady was a young seventy-six years old with Hepatitis C and blind. She had no strength to defend herself from a large and muscular woman, assaulting her because of a failed friendship. I might have hurried to save her from falling, and I did not take her trauma from her with love and through Jesus Christ. I was inhibited and failed her in her fall. I would have no freedom to live on if we hadn’t been saved by Christ by the understanding I carried in my face. I sat down near her and prayed for Jesus Christ to come into my sorrow in my face. My lady opened her blind eyes and saw my feelings with Christ of sorrow and smiled instantly, twice, with a huge happiness that I’d never seen in her for over forty-five years of marriage. It was a smile of goodness and happiness, that she gave me an image of my wife ten years earlier, when she hadn’t experienced rape. I thank my lady and Jesus for giving us this wonderful ending to her life and the resolution of our conflicts.

A 7-step path to manifest and strengthen self-love, and quiet our inner critic. A book with such a powerful title requires a few qualifiers. Spoiler alert: reading this book won’t actually result in actual world domination. However, the author will set you on the path of dominating your own world, being the master of your destiny, and creating the life of your dreams. This is not a lofty promise. Although it is a big undertaking, it’s also attainable! The Path to Self-Love and World Domination is written by licensed psychologist and trauma therapist, Dr. Heidi Green. She reflects on her own journey from insecurity and self-loathing to emotional recovery and self-love, and shares how so many people appear stuck in their own way. She’ll teach you why you struggle with self-doubt and criticism, and take you on a journey to change the way you think, feel, and interact with the world. You will gain an understanding of why you have a critical inner voice, as well as how to move past it and fully love yourself. The odyssey of self-love is far more complicated than it may seem. It requires more than just holding yourself in high regard, taking candlelit baths, or practicing your favorite yoga poses. It involves understanding your struggles and weaknesses through the lens of compassion, and putting to rest the self-defeating notions that keep you stuck. To help overcome the inner critic in all of us, Dr. Green will guide you through a 7-step path to manifest and strengthen self-love. She’ll teach you to nurture and mature your inner child, reject unhelpful thoughts and behaviors, and restructure the way you respond to yourself and the world. Finally, you will be given your World Domination tool kit: 6 traits that must be cultivated for a truly awesome you. This book will take you on a journey to discover what self-love is, what it isn't, how to find it, and why having it is the most important element to your life's happiness. You’ll learn how to speak to yourself with kindness, reject unhelpful thoughts, and other powerful tools to let self-love reign supreme in your life.
