In this memoir, set as deeply in his mind as in the Southeast Asian jungle, a young American soldier embarks on a journey to a war that, for him, will never be over. The world was a playground for Mickey, a naive Irish American kid bored with his life. His father served in World War II, his brother was a Marine in Vietnam; now it was his turn. His 365 days in the hell that was Vietnam builds in torment until an attack on a bunker complex in Cambodia. Wounded, his friend captured, he becomes a tormented survivor knowing he is always just a heartbeat from death. His adventure-turned-nightmare brings a visceral understanding of the words penned by Thoreau, the very same words Mickey's father spoke throughout Mickey's youth: "The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation," especially those at war. This memoir chronicles the key perspective-shaping experiences of a U.S. Army grunt fighting in Vietnam.

Set as deeply in his mind as in the depths of the Southeast-Asian jungle, a young American soldier embarks on a journey to a war that, for him, will never be over. I am that American soldier. It's 1969. I am 19 and living in New York City. The world was a playground for Mickey, a naive Irish-American kid bored with his life who felt he was ready for the adventures of war. His father served in World War II, his brother a Marine in Vietnam, now it was his turn. His 365 days in the hell that was Vietnam builds in torment until an attack on a bunker complex in Cambodia where everything goes terribly wrong. Wounded, his friend captured, he becomes a tormented survivor knowing he is always just a heartbeat from death. His adventure turned nightmare brings a visceral understanding of the words penned by Thoreau, those very same words with which his father imparted enduring wisdom throughout his youth: "Most men live lives of quiet desperation," especially those at war. Paralizzato. A soli diciannove anni.

Contemporary scholarly discourses about decolonising materialities are taking two noticeable trajectories, the first trajectory privileges establishing “connections”, “relationships” and “associations” between human beings and nature. The second trajectory privileges restoration, restitution, reparations for colonial dispossessions, lootings and disinheritance. While the first trajectory presupposes that colonialism was merely about “separation”, “alienation”, and “disconnections” between human beings and nature, the second trajectory stresses the colonialists’ dispossession, disinheritance and privations of Africans. Drawing on contemporary discourses about materialities in relation to semiotics, (non-)representationalism, rhetoric, ecocriticism, territorialisation, deterritorialisation and reterritorialisation, translation, animism, science and technology studies, this book teases out the intellectually rutted terrain of African materialities. It argues that in a world of increasing impoverishment, the significance of materialities cannot be overemphasised: more so for the continent of Africa where impoverishment “materialises” in the midst of resource opulence. The book is a pacesetter in no holds barred interrogation of African materialities.

My name is Trysta Adams. Life has been very confusing this past year. I suppose it started when I woke up from an accidental overdose. Before I opened my eyes, I had a chance to reflect on my life. Within a relatively short time, my fiance dumped me, I was no longer on speaking terms with my family, and I was working at one of the last somewhat acceptable jobs a person could have without being considered a shadow. Once upon a time, those problems could have been considered minor. Those days are long gone. Everything from what a person eats, to what were once considered minor legal infractions, gets reported to the Character Department. People don't walk around with criminal records anymore. Crimes are punishable by execution. Now, every single little thing is important, for better or worse. People are judged on their character score, and that determines how life works out. Shadows have character scores that are unacceptable. Most exist by working as day laborers, or are paid to keep certain purchases off of other's character scores, such as drugs or prostitutes. That is a way that some subvert the system. Anyway, when I opened my eyes, I was offered the chance to have computerized cells injected into my body to work with my brain, and help me make better decisions to improve my life, health and character score. In addition to the new treatment, the guy from work whom I had a major crush on, finally admitted to being interested in me! Life after the treatment was like the doctor described. I was happy, and hopelessly in love. Sometimes though, it seemed like there were pieces missing. I had no idea I was keeping a secret from myself.....a big secret. Sometimes ignorance is bliss. Other times it can be dangerous."

I come from a family of fighters. I always thought I'd follow in their shadows, becoming unstoppable in the ring. That changed the day I saved the life of a woman I loved, but could never have. My brother hailed me as a hero, and my reward was a wheelchair. Paralyzed, my life became an inescapable nightmare. Until I met her. Ash Mabie had a heart-stopping smile and a laugh that numbed the rage and resentment brewing inside of me. She showed me that even the darkest night still had stars, and it didn't matter one bit that you had to lie in the weeds to see them. I was a jaded asshole who fell for a girl with a knack for running away. I couldn't even walk but I would have spent a lifetime chasing her. Now, I'm on the ropes during the toughest battles of my life. Fighting the shadows of our past. Fighting to reclaim my future. Fighting for her.

The Cortii are mercenaries, for hire to anyone who can afford their services. From their beginnings in humanoid pre-history, they have grown and colonised to span every galaxy. Every government uses them; no single government can destroy them. To the Councils that rule the Cortii, eleven lives are easily replaced. For the newest unit in their ranks, those eleven lives were half their number. To their commander, they're a marker she has every intention of making good on, and while some of her unit's wounds are less visible, it doesn't mean they can't be lethal.

Year 2522. Lyra Daniels is dead. Okay, so I only died for sixty-six seconds. But when I came back to life, I got a brand new name and a snazzy new uniform. Go me! Seriously, though, it's very important that Lyra Daniels stays dead, at least as far as the murdering looters, know. While dying is the scariest thing that's happened to me, it morphed my worming skills. I can manipulate the Q-net like never before. But the looters have blocked us from communicating with the rest of the galaxy and now they believe we've gone silent, like Planet Xinji (where silent really means dead). A Protector Class spaceship is coming to our rescue, but we still have to survive almost two years until they arrive - if they arrive at all. Until then, we have to figure out how to stop an unstoppable alien threat. And it's only a matter of time before the looters learn I'm not dead and returns to finish what they started. There's no way I'm going to let the looters win. Instead I'll do whatever it takes to save the people I love. But even I'm running out of ideas...
